Student Announcement, 1/12

Dear Parents/Caregivers,

I am writing to inform you how we at GMHS addressed last week’s events at the Capitol building in Washington DC.

I began today by reading the following during the morning announcements:

“Before reading the Pledge of Allegiance, I want to take a moment to talk about the attack on the Capitol last week. Like many of you, I watched the news as the events unfolded. I never thought I would see the day that the Capitol was invaded by mobs of rioters.

Many of you might have felt sad or scared thinking about the violence that took place. The events were disturbing and hard to understand, and we know that you might have questions or want to talk about what you saw. Throughout the week, you’ll have opportunities to ask questions and engage in dialogue with your teachers. If you are in need of support, please reachout to your teachers, counselors, and/or administrators. The adults in the building care very much about your wellbeing and are here for you.”

This past weekend, I sent a document to the faculty and staff about how best to talk with students about these events. Last week, and continuing into this week, teachers will continue to  address any concerns students may have and help them process the events. We also recognize others may find comfort returning to the routine of classes and may not want to discuss. Either way, my hope is that we provided a safe learning environment in which students feel comfortable to ask questions and engage in a respectful and thoughtful dialogue.

Sincerely,

Mr. Dan Richards

GMHS Principal
